How Emotions Can Affect Successful Communication

The way, in which we can control our emotions when communicating with others, especially in a business environment, was the theme of a workshop: ''Emotions and Communication“.

Dragomir Kojić, IP partner in the Karanović Nikolić law office and a certified ICF coach, described for workshop participants the ways we can recognize and control emotions, the difference between thinking and feeling functions, the biochemistry of stress and communication styles.

Emotions appear as a state of excitement for something that is important to us and as such can have a positive and negative influence on our behavior. The basic ways of emotion manifestation are physical, expressive and subjective. Kojić pointed out that, if emotions overwhelm us, there is a great possibility of losing control over our behavior. And due to pressure or outsized expectations, we come into situations that do not encourage absolutely rational thinking. In this context come the thinking and feeling functions, and if one of these is dominant, the other over time becomes suppressed. It is important to harmonize these two functions because suppression of one of them can endanger our health. The best way to control emotions is to teach ourselves to change the perception of reality, to establish inner-dialogue and to learn the right way to consider situations.

As an example of a successfully thinking method that can be used in a business environment and on commercial projects, Kojić emphasized Disney’s corporate strategy. At the core of this method there are sub-processes that influence project success. These are: The Dreamers, who are in charge of creating new ideas; The Realists, who are decision-makers and solution-solvers; and The Critics, who point out flaws and omissions. The success of a project depends on the coordination all of these sub-processes.
